Scala #23 – Mara Simpson
Mara Simpson entsteigt dem Zug mit einem großen Lächeln im Gesicht und dieses scheint das ganze Wochenende. Das erste Frühlingswochenende präsentiert sich mild und sonnig und so beginnen wir den Nachmittag mit einem ausgedehnten Spaziergang auf den Höhen des Erzgebirges mit weiten Blicken auf die nächsten Bergketten und nach Norden in den Talkessel von Chemnitz.
Mit dem Eintreffen der Gäste steigert sich die fröhliche Stimmung und füllt die Scala. Mara beginnt ihr Konzert mit „Whiskey“ von ihrem 2012er Album „To The Seas“, das sie mit ihrer neuseeländischen Band aufgenommen hat. Danach reihen sich Songs ihrer aktuellen EP „Lighthouse“ an ältere Songs sowie neue Kompositionen der letzten Wochen. Ich hatte Mara im April 2014 in Chemnitz gesehen. Damals war sie nicht allein auf der Bühne sondern hatte sich zum Teil gesangliche und instrumentale Unterstützung mitgebracht. Und seitdem habe ich vorwiegend ihre 2012er CD gehört, bis im Dezember die Lighthouse EP für die Crowdfunding-Unterstützer veröffentlicht wurde. Beide Alben sind mit voller Band eingespielt worden. Und nun steht Mara nur mit ihrer Gitarre als Begleitung in unserem Wohnzimmer. Der Abend wird dann wieder so ein Beispiel, wie gute Songs funktionieren, wenn sie wie von Mara mit einem feinsinnigen Gitarrenspiel und mit ihrer sehr wandelbaren Stimme dargeboten werden. So gibt es vor jedem Song eine kleine Einstimmung und anschließend eine Reise durch verschiedenste Gefühlszustände und Epochen von Familiengeschichte. Zumeist sind die Songs sehr leise und zurückhaltend und nur selten bricht es laut aus Mara heraus, dies geschieht dann für die Zuhörer dafür umso überraschender. Im Rückblick kann ich sagen, dass Mara Simpsons Konzert für mich ein sehr spannendes war, weil mir fast alle Songs von ihren Alben bekannt waren. Es war ein großer Genuss, diese akustischen Stücke zu hören und fast ihre Verletzlichkeit zu spüren. Adorf war der erste offizielle Abend von Maras Deutschlandtour und ich wünsche ihr viele weitere Abende und ein zahlreiches Publikum!

Mara Simpson got out of the train with a great smile in her face and that smile stayed there the whole weekend. The first spring weekend presents itself in a mild and sunny manner. So we start the afternoon with an expanded stroll along the heights of the Ore mountains with wide views over the hills and over Chemnitz to the north.
The gentle and funny mood rises more and more with the first guests entering the Scala. Mara kicks the concert off with „Whiskey“ from her 2012 album „To The Seas“ recorded in and with her band from New Zealand. And following we hear songs from the brand-new EP „Lighthouse“ which was released just a few days before this concert. And there are more old songs and a new composition only a few weeks old.
I’ve see Mara once before in April 2014 in Chemnitz. At that night she was not alone on stage but with the help of some voices and a guitar here and there. And since then I listened to her CD „To The Seas“ until December when her „Lighthouse“-EP was released fro the crowdfunding supporters. Both albums were recorded with a full band and sound really great.
And now and here Mara fills the room with her voice and guitar. This evening is getting another of those examples how songs really work out for good when featured in a way Mara does with her sophisticated guitar-playing and her very variable voice. Every song is introduced with a little behind-the-scenes-story and then Mara takes us on a journey of her affective states and the eras of her family history. Most of the songs are quiet, gentle and restrained. There are rare emotional outbursts surprising the audience.
Looking back I can say that Mara’s concert was a very exciting one because I knew almost all of the songs from the both albums. It was a great pleasure for me and the audience to listen to them as pure and acoustic and to almost feel the vulnerability of the songs.
The Scala Adorf was the first official night of Mara’s tour through Germany this spring. I wish her many more of those inspiring nights and numerous audiences.
